Bamboo Hemp jersey front is hand dyed with all natural organic indigo dye. Some has polka dots silkscreened with water based textile ink.  The lining is tight weave extra soft Egyptian cotton, that is a recycled fiber.  The standard mask comes with 3mm elastic straps. You are sent the mask with extra long straps, loosely tied. Fit them to you head/face and tighten and slide the knot inside the fold-over. If you prefer, you can choose to have an over the head strap added instead.  A piece of elastic has been added, to keep the strap in place and allowing a better fit.  Without it we find the twill cotton cord will twist and slip off.

Wash your mask as soon as you receive before wearing, and preferably each day used. (I personally have 3 masks that I rotate, washing weekly or as needed. I bike with a silk bandana, and travel with my mask to use while walking or running errands)

Adult Size: 6.75" (nose to chin) x 10" (side to side) 14.25" with straps (adjustable) Optional strap: 51"

Kid Size: 5.25" (nose to chin) x 7.25" (side to side) 11.5" with straps (adjustable)  Optional strap: 38"

Why these materials? See below. For tons of info on masks and how to make your own, check out our blog post.

Bamboo and Hemp both have similar benefits for creating with, using, and wearing. Both crops grow very quickly, without the use of chemical herbicides or pesticides and produce high yield commercial crops which optimize both land use and available resources.  Hemp also returns a significant amount of the nutrients it takes from the soil leaving it rich and ready for new crops.

These fabrics are naturally hypo-allergenic, offer UV light protection and thermo-regulation keeping you warm in winter and cool in the summer. Hemp textiles are known for their strength but have reputation of being "prickly." Bamboo is known as one of the softest fibers created. So this particular blend is very comfortable. Both fabrics are known to be absorbant, but bamboo helps with wick moisture away and dry quicker than cotton and is antimicrobial.

Indigo Polygonum tinctorium or Indigofera Tinctoria is a plant based dye used for thousands of years, and is used medicinally as well. Is has been studied to contain beneficial properties, including "antifebrile, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antimicrobial, detoxifying purposes, restenosis and skin psoriasis." When used with all natural material to dye fiber we harness some of these benefits.

LINEN: Requiring far fewer chemical inputs than cotton and little to no irrigation, linen, made from flax, is by nature a more environmental fabric than most. Breathable, lightweight and slightly textured, linen softens with time and wear. (Kids size yellow is dyed with all natural marigolds plant dye. Kid size pink is dyed with all natural cochineal.)

Lining is a very tight weave, extra soft cotton.  Pairing with the outer more breathable layer was a very conscious decision.

DISCLAIMER!!! We want everyone to wear a mask. But know the limits of protection please. Social distancing and mask wearing should be done in combination for 100% protection. And more over, it's protecting those around you, from YOU. Read our blog post for all the details and research I did back in March.  I made a ton of masks for our local hospital and wanted to be sure I was safe, for them. My intention has always been to not profit off of this pandemic, but I want everyone to be safe not only for themselves but the population.  So we can get back to as normal as we can as safely as we can. This pattern and others, are available for everyone to make their own if they can not purchase.
