Botanical Name: Tagetes Erecta; Marigold is a potential ornamental plant grown commercially in different part of the world and obtained from different species of Tagetes of family Asteraceae. The genus is also recognized as a potential source of very interesting biologically active products viz, carotenoids that are being used as food colorants. Tagetes (Marigold flowers) are yellow to orange red in color are a rich sources of lutein, a carotenoid pigment. The principle coloring component of marigold flowers is lutein, a fat soluble carotenoid, which is responsible for the yellow to orange color to the dye. It also contains galenite, lycopene, V-carotene. Marigold contains some or many medicinal properties. It is used internally in the treatment of indigestion, colic, severe constipation, cough and dysentry.
