Bundle dyeing is a great way to sample colors that you collect, forage, or save from the food waste bin. Your collection of dye stuff doesn't have to be grand to sample the different color ways in this fun process. As a beginner, you will be amazed and shocked by some of the colors you can achieve. The more you create, the larger your knowledge of natural dyes becomes.

We start talking about mordants and modifiers and how they relate to this particular dye method. 3 different pots will be prepared so that students can experiment the many ways you can use heat, steam, and minerals to bring different results and change the colors of plants and flowers. As well as learn several techniques on how to use natural forming iron oxide creatively, how to treat your fabrics, and the fun you can have when natural dyes are added.

All materials are provided. Each student will receive a silk bandana and cotton bandana, hanky and wristlet. All will be prepped in mordant for you. Students are welcome to bring up to 2 natural fiber pieces that we will mordant while you dye the provided pieces.

Each item should be prewashed and natural fiber; ie Silk,Cotton, Wool or Linens. However manufactured cellulose dye as well; ie modal, tencel, rayon, but it’s hard to tell how well.

  • One piece we’ll be preparing in an iron mordant to demonstrate how to prepare your fabrics to accept natural color, which you’ll then bundle dye. Here you'll see more green, greys and black.
  • The second item will be an option for a take home project that will be dyed with rust. This can actually be a blended fiber (ie cotton/poly)
