Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) is an annual broadleaf plant in the aster family that produces rounded yellow or reddish-orange flower heads and rosettes of branched leaves, like a thistle. Sometimes used as a substitute for saffron, hence it is also known as Bastard Saffron.
It has been used as a dye for beautiful yellows to deep orange for hundreds of year. We like using in bundle dyeing!
Modifiers: alkaline and iron
We buy in bulk from a San Fran company but it originally is coming from Paraguay.
