In this extended summer fun session students will get hands on and dive deep into their own vats! Each attendee should be able to have their own little pot or pair two people per pot.
BTJ studio has both 35 and 55 gallon ferrous vats as well as a stove top fructose vat on hand. However for this series we will work more closely with creating vats with raw materials such as black walnut, orange rinds, and spoiled fruits. A great number of dye resists that are found throughout the world will be shown and can be experimented with in class including more time consuming shibori, wax resist (batik) and flour resists (cava, rice flour, katazome). We discuss the historically significance of this dye and how special it is culturally for so many.
Movies, videos, and slide shows will be shown to connect us with the process, history and people of this magical plant.

Students are welcome to bring natural fabrics they want to dye, but some materials provided. An email will be sent out with additional details once it is known if the class can run, no later than two weeks before the scheduled date. This will include the final invoice of $500. All students receive a hand bound print out with information, bandanas, tea towels, and tote or equivalent along with a Better Than Jam baggie to carry all your lovely creations with you.
