Learn all about the many historically rich techniques using all natural dyes stuffs, where the come from, the social significance in ancient cultures, and how to forage for you own materials.
This class is a more intensive hands on version of "Dyeing with Nature" workshops which only runs 3 hours. In this special intensive we will meet over the weekend, allowing for more techniques and skills to be demonstrated and more time to accomplish them! We get deeper and more hands on with the lengthy process, which you just can not dive into in just 3 hours. Like mordanting your own pieces and special tricks to prepare specialty natural dyes.
Day 1 AM
We learn about fibers and how to prepare them. Proper mordanting techniques for wool, silk and plant based fibers. Students can come with materials (size limitations) or materials are given.
DAY 1 PM
We focus on specialty dyes including but not limited to, cochineal, madder root, alkanet root, etc. We will start or dye baths and prepare for the next day.
Day 2 AM
We'll come to our dye pots and work on some fresh ones, while seeing how to alter colors using modifiers and our prepared fibers. Fun ways to resist the fiber leaving pattern as well as painting and printing will be introduced.
Day 2 PM
The last half of the day we focus on the many ways to bundle dye and eco print, while finishing up the work from previous sessions.
